Vivo S17 Pro

Vivo S17 and S17 Pro Smartphones Review – The Vivo S17 and S17 Pro are the two new additions to Vivo’s S series of smartphones. They both be launched in June 2023 in China, but they should see a global launch soon as Vivo posted a Vivo S17 and S17 Pro teaser video from the Vivo Turkiye account. It also supports 5G connectivity for gigabit download speeds and lower latency. Both of the devices arrive with a similar set of configurations whereas the Pro variant has additional camera sensors and a flagship SoC.

The design of the new Vivo S17 and S17 Pro seems to follow that of the new smartphones that Vivo launched this year and it also includes a LED ring that Vivo’s other smartphones have. The new smartphone also packs powerful internals that will surely enhance your user experience and the camera performance. Let’s begin with a detailed review of Vivo S17 and S17 Pro and find out all it can offer you.

Vivo S17 and S17 Pro Smartphones Review

Highlights

  1. Both Vivo S17 and S17 Pro feature a curved 6.78-inch AMOLED display panel with up to 120Hz refresh rate support.
  2. The Vivo S17 is powered by the Qualcomm Snapdragon 778G+  chipset, while the S17 Pro is powered by a MediatekDimensity 8200 chipset for a flagship experience.
  3. The two new smartphones run on the latest Android 13OS with OriginOS 3.0 interface for extended customization support.
  4. The Vivo S17 and S17 Pro smartphones feature a 50MP dual and triple-camera system respectively on the back and a 50MP selfie camera at the front.
  5. Both Vivo S17 and S17 Profeature Li-Po 4600 mAh battery along with 80W fast wired charging support.

Design and Display

Both Vivo S17 and S17 Prosport have the same design. The differences are in the color options and camera lenses. The body of both smartphones is built solid and there’s no bending of any sort. The smartphone’s weight is well-balanced and under 190 grams. The smartphones are also very slim at just 7.5mm thickness. The Vivo S17 is available in Black, Blue, and Pink color options, while the Vivo S17 Pro is available in Black, Blue, and Silver color options.

The back and the side frame feature a matte finish and the grip is very comfortable. The displays are curved as well. For the display, both smartphones have a curved 6.78-inch FHD+ AMOLED display panel with up to 120Hz refresh rate, 1 Billion colors, and HDR10+ certification. The panel can get up to 1300 nits of peak brightness under peak sunlight, so outdoor visibility shouldn’t be an issue. All in all, the display department is good enough for a decent experience whereas a bit better refresh rate support was expected from a device lying in an entry-level flagship smartphone.

Memory and Internal

The Vivo S17 features the 6nm Qualcomm Snapdragon 778+ chipset, while the Vivo S17 Pro features a 4nm MediaTek’s Dimensity 8200 chipset. Vivo S17 and S17 Pro’s SoC can reach up to a 1×2.5GHz and 1×3.5GHz clocking speed respectively, so they have plenty of horsepower. But in terms of raw performance, the MediaTekDimensity 8200 is more powerful than the other one, but realistically both are powerful enough to run all your daily apps smoothly.

The GPU inside the Vivo S17 and S17 Pro are Adreno 642L and Mali-G610 MC6 and they are plenty powerful to run all your favorite games such asGenshin Impact, CODm, and PUBG mobile with smooth framerates while with the Pro variant, you will be able to achieve high graphic settings also. The internals of the smartphone are designed to dissipate heat quickly, so the smartphones remain cool. Let’s talk about memory and storage.

Both Vivo S17 and S17 Pro can be purchased with 8GB to 12GB of RAM and 256GB to 512GB of internal storage. The support for an SD card is missing on both devices so choose the variant that satisfies your storage needs. Both smartphones also come with Origin OS 3.0 interface running on top of the latest Android 13OS. Also, both smartphones support 5G connectivity with gigabit speeds for super-speed internet connectivity.

Camera

Both Vivo S17 and S17 Pro feature a 50MP main sensor and an 8MP ultra-wide camera. But the Pro model has one extra lens and that’s a 12MP telephoto sensor with 2x zoom capabilities. Their main 50MP camera sensor can capture exceptionally good shots that tend to have great details and high dynamic range. But the 8MP ultra-wide camera’s performance is not the same. It takes average pictures with softer details.

The 12MP telephoto camera on the Vivo S17 Pro is not bad and can actually take some decent shots. There’s no color shift from the main camera and the detail level seems fine. Taking pictures at night can also be a delight as the 50MP main sensor is optimized and also has a proper night mode algorithm to take some amazing night shots. The Ring LEDs can also brighten up dimly lit indoor environments and boost image quality.

On the front, both smartphones feature a 50MP selfie camera. This manages to capture great selfies with an amazing detail level and natural skin tones. When the comes to video recording, both smartphones can shoot up to 4Kvideos@30FPS from the main rear camera, while the selfie camera is maxed out at 1080P@30FPS. Besides this, both the devices lack the gyro-EIS support so videos may come out shaky.

Battery and Others

Both Vivo S17 and S17 Pro feature a Li-Po 4600 mAh battery, which will provide 1 – 2 days of battery life depending on your usage. However, with heavier usage, the smartphone may not last that long. But there’s little to worry as the smartphone supports 80W of wired fast charging, which can charge the smartphone to 70% in just 30 mins. However, there is no support for wireless charging or reverse charging on the device.

Apart from that, the new smartphones come with an under-display optical fingerprint sensor, dual-band Wi-Fi 6, Bluetooth 5.2, NFC, and a USB Type C port for charging. The price of the Vivo S17 starts at $355 (Rs 29,060 in India) approx.. while the Vivo S17 Pro has a price tag of $436 (Rs 36,040 in India) approx.

Conclusion

The new Vivo S17 and S17 Profeature high-end specs that enable the best possible experience. Its display, performance, and cameras are some of the best parts of the smartphone. If these are things you look for in a smartphone, then these two smartphones are great options. Whether you should go with the Pro or the non-pro model will depend on whether you need the extra CPU horsepower and the telephoto camera that the Pro model has.

But not everything is as rosy as it sounds. The ultra-wide camera performance is average. There’s no display Protection. There’s no wireless charging either, and also, the refresh rate support could be better as per the pricing of the smartphone. All in all, both smartphones provide a decent value until we talk about pricing. In our opinion, their price is a bit on the higher side as per the specs offered. There are alternatives present in the same price bracket that offer a way better value for money deal such as Xiaomi Redmi K60 Ultra. Therefore, we recommend you check the alternatives once and go with the one that satisfies your needs. However, the final decision is up to you so choose accordingly.
