Tecno Spark 20

Tecno Spark 20 Smartphone Review – Nowadays finding a decent budget segment smartphone is quite difficult, especially when talking about mainstream phones. Often those devices lack proper configuration of hardware, software, and other factors. But still, there is a handful of smartphone brands that are rising in popularity. One of them would be the Tecno devices. Moreover, the smartphone makers recently announced the new Spark 20 lineup in December 2023.

This lineup will include phones like Spark 20, Spark 20 Pro, and Spark 20 Pro Plus. All of them will be released in the affordable 4G phone segment with some additional perks here and there. As for today’s review, we have the Tecno Spark 20, which brings pretty adequate specs according to the overall price point. Besides this, it’s more likely unveiled in the Southeast Asian smartphone market. So, with no delay, let’s dive into the detailed review of the Tecno Spark 20 smartphone.

Tecno Spark 20 Smartphone Review

Highlights

  1. The device brings a 6.6-inch IPS LCD display panel with 90Hz refresh rate support.
  2. As for the software skin, you are getting the latest Android 13 OS configuration with different customization attributes.
  3. Speaking of which, the phone is powered by the MediaTek Helio G85 chipset with Mali-G52 MC2 GPU.
  4. A 50MP camera setup will appear on the back panel with a 32MP selfie lens.
  5. Under the hood, the device equips a huge 5000 mAh battery with 18W fast wired charging.

Design and Display

In terms of the design, the device looks fabulous with various color choices, as you can pick this device in Cyber White, Gravity Black, and Neon Gold color options. All of them have an astounding appearance, while if you are looking for something different, then don’t miss to check out the Magic Skin 2.0 (Blue) variant. It offers a smooth texture on the back panel with a square camera module.

On the other hand, the built quality of the Tecno Spark 20 is slightly average as you are getting a plastic body. Hopefully, the glossy color texture makes the phone appealing, while the phone does feel lightweight. Apart from this, you will also notice IP53 dust and splash-resistant certification on this phone, which is a plus point.

As for the front, you will receive a dot-notch 6.6-inch IPS LCD display panel with slightly thick bezels and HD resolution support. However, the resolution aspect is slightly disappointing as you won’t able to watch FHD+ content. Still, it’s a good thing to see that the company added a 90Hz refresh rate support, which will grant smooth UI navigation. Although, there’s no info about corning glass protection. Furthermore, the device has default nits brightness support. Overall, the display section is average while the low 720p resolution support feels underwhelming.

Memory and Internal

The hardware capabilities of the Tecno Spark 20 are good as a budget-friendly smartphone. The reason for that would be the astounding 12nm MediaTek Helio G85 chipset, which can push the processing cores limit up to a 2×2.0GHz clocking speed. In real-time usage, you won’t notice many problems, unless you are performing multitasking and gaming simultaneously.

In terms of the gaming aspect, the device will bring an average gaming experience. But don’t expect much from the Mali-G52 MC2 GPU in the first place as we noticed a few lags during our play-through of PUBG and Genshin Impact. Yet, at the same time, the smartphone makers ensure that you will obtain the latest Android 13 OS with numerous customization privileges.

As for the Android updates, the company hasn’t given any clear answer yet. But it’s expected that you will receive the upcoming Android OS update, while for the rest, we can’t say much. Now, let’s have a look at the storage option. Here, you will obtain a 256GB internal space so that storing your favorite games, documents, and other media files won’t be a hassle. Plus, the phone also added 8GB RAM support with MicroSD slot support for storage expansion. All in all, the storage and software section is decent while the processing power feels below the standard.

Camera

The Spark 20 features a 50MP camera with the latest AI camera features support. With them, the users can utilize a wide range of filters and modify the overall background as per their wish. Moreover, you will notice impressive results in the daylight with crisp colors and precise contrast control.

On the other hand, the lowlight photography is slightly downgraded as you will notice noise in the background. Besides this, light glare is also noticed even if you are using the night mode. However, there’s one thing good about this phone, which is the 1440p at 30fps video recording ability. Although, you won’t receive video stabilization inside the camera app.

Following this, the dot-notch 32MP lens works pretty great, especially when you are capturing selfies with the front camera. On the other hand, the front camera also offers dynamic island notification features. Following this, the photography isn’t that bad, thanks to the various filters and modes of the native camera app. But, the video recording resolution can only go up to 1080p@30fps from the front camera. Furthermore, you will miss secondary lens support on the main camera modules which is quite disappointing.

Battery and Others

The Tecno Spark 20 might not have the best features. However, the device will offer 5000 mAh battery configuration. With that much battery capacity, the device can effortlessly provide up to six hours of screen time for your activities. Plus, it will also support gaming for more than 3+ hours.

As for the charging support, the users can rely on the 18W fast charger to refuel the battery, which usually takes an hour and a half to refuel from flat to 100%. On the other hand, the company offers adequate sensors and comms support with side-mounted fingerprint sensor support. Yet, the sound output is average even after having a dual speaker. Lastly, the phone is priced at $180 (Rs 14,999 in India) approx.

Conclusion

Tecno Spark 20 didn’t shy away from showing its shortcomings and embraced all of the downsides gracefully. But from a logical standpoint, the device does have some average camera results and slow processing speed. But still, those things are manageable if you aren’t using the phone to that level. Hopefully, you won’t notice much problem with the display and battery life.

But the huge problem lies in the low audio output, which makes the calling experience low. Plus, the device also lacks 5G connectivity. However, these factors can be overlooked if you are looking for a budget phone with a decent camera, good display, and adequate battery life. But still, the Tecno Spark 20 does feel overpriced as per the alternatives available in the market. if you want to take a second opinion, then consider checking out the Xiaomi Redmi 13C.

With the Xiaomi phone, you will receive all-rounder specs and a good configuration of battery and hardware. But still, if you want something similar and better, then the Samsung Galaxy F14 would be a good deal. Make sure to compare those attributes so that you can get a rough idea of what you are getting. Anyway, the final decision is up to you so choose a device that fulfils your needs and requirements.
