Design and Display

Samsung never shied away from creating elegant designs for their Ultra series and it’s good to see that it hasn’t changed with the new smartphone. At first glance, you may think it looks just like how it does in the last year’s Ultra but you would be so wrong. It is true that the looks largely remained the same but the get-up has changed completely. Gone are the curved display and the curved edges.

Now you get a flat display with slightly chamfered edges, which is a pleasant surprise this year. The Galaxy S23 Ultra’s best appeal was its large curved display, which is gone now. This can be a pro as well as a dealbreaker depending on what you prefer. Then the Armor Aluminum body is replaced with a Titanium body that not only makes the device stronger but also makes it lighter. So, your new Galaxy S24 Ultra will be better protected against drops or blunt force to the body.

The S Pen is still there and it’s still the best Pen implementation on a smartphone. As for the display, you get a 6.8-inches Dynamic LTPO 2X AMOLED display with 120Hz refresh rate support. you get an ultra-crisp display and the text looks very sharp. Also, watching content on the screen will be quite fun as it supports HDR10+ resolution and the display can get as bright as 2600 nits peak brightness, making it easy to use the smartphone outdoors under direct sunlight.

The smartphone is available in Titanium Black, Titanium Gray, Titanium Violet, Titanium Yellow, Titanium Blue, Titanium Green, and Titanium Orange color options. The smartphone is also protected against dust and water as it has been certified with IP68 certification. The display is also protected with the Corning Gorilla Glass. Overall, the display section is awesome while the smartphone is 8.6mm thick.

Memory and Internal

The Samsung Galaxy S24 Ultra features the newest flagship 4nm Qualcomm Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 chipset that can reach up to a 1×3.39 GHz clocking speed. It’s also the fastest Android chipset in the world, so there’s nothing to worry about.

It can run anything you want on it, whether that’s social media apps, games, or any productivity software. Speaking of gaming, you will find the Adreno 750 GPU quite powerful. It has defeated the mighty Apple A17 Pro’s GPU in multiple tests. So playing games such as Genshin Impact, PUBG Mobile, and CODm will be no problem, even at the highest graphical fidelity. Also, the chipset supports 5G connectivity, so enjoy gigabit-level speeds.

For RAM and storage, the smartphone can be purchased with up to 12GB of RAM and 256GB to 1TB of internal storage. When it comes to the OS, the Samsung Galaxy S24 Ultra is running on the latest Android 14 OS out of the box with the OneUI 6.1 user interface for better customizability support. The software side of things is further enhanced with Galaxy AI, such as Live Translation, smart image search, and a lot more. All in all, the device arrives with robust performance.

Camera

The Samsung Galaxy S24 Ultra sports a 200MP quad rear-camera system. The main 200MP rear camera takes extremely detailed pictures with a high dynamic range and natural color tone. The detail levels are preserved when zoomed in. But if you want even better zoomed-in shots, there’s the 10MP standard telephoto and the 50MP periscopic telephoto lens. These sensors can take some great shots at 3x and 5x optical zoom levels respectively.

However, at higher zoom levels, both sensors will work together can take some decent pictures with most of the fine details preserved. There’s also a fourth sensor and that is a 12MP ultra-wide camera that takes some fantastic ultra-wide pictures with a 120˚ FOV with high detail levels and no distortions around the edges. Also, Samsung’s cameras always excelled in low-light situations and it’s no different here. It helps capture more light and preserve more details.

For the selfie camera, the 12MP sensor takes some decent selfies with a natural color tone and higher detail levels. As for video recording, the Samsung Galaxy S24 Ultra can shoot at a maximum of 8K videos@30FPS from the rear cameras, while the selfie camera can only shoot at a maximum of 4K videos@ 60FPS. Also, the rear camera system has both OIS and gyro-EIS for video stabilization systems.

Battery and Others

The Samsung Galaxy S24 Ultra has a Li-Ion 5000mAh high-capacity battery. So, the Samsung Galaxy S24 Ultra provides an excellent backup and can last 1 – 2 days easily with light to moderate usage but if you play games for an extended period, the battery will drain faster and last less than a day full day. The battery will also last longer if you keep the display resolution set to 1080p instead of 1440p, which pushes the GPU harder and drains the battery faster.

This smartphone also supports the 45W wired fast charger, which will charge the smartphone to 65% in 30 minutes. The smartphone also supports 15W fast wireless charging along with 4.5W reverse wireless charging for your supported earphones and other accessories. Apart from that, the phone also has Wi-Fi 7, Bluetooth 5.3, an ultrasonic under-display fingerprint scanner, Samsung Dex, Ultra-wideband, NFC, GPS, and a USB Type-C port. The Samsung Galaxy S24 Ultra starts at $1299 (Rs 1,39,999 in India) approx. for the base variant.

Conclusion

The Samsung Galaxy S24 Ultra is a true flagship smartphone that has everything you can want in a smartphone. It can go toe to toe with the likes of the iPhone 15 Pro Max but also beats its predecessor, the Samsung Galaxy S23 Ultra, even in camera performance. However, it’s a big win.

It is an upgrade and the comparison pictures will tell the same tale but it is not that big of an upgrade and hard to see at first glance. We only came across two things that can be considered as a con. The first is the lack of a curved screen, which will surely disappoint a set of users. The second con is the lack of a 10x periscopic camera. This year we only get a 5x periscopic camera but there’s barely any noticeable difference between the two.

So, if you are rocking an older Galaxy S20 Ultra, Galaxy Note 10, or any other older smartphone, this upgrade will be worth it. This experience can be further enhanced with Galaxy AI, which will surely get a lot more features in the coming months. But if you already own the Galaxy S23 Ultra or any other recent flagship smartphone, then you won’t find too much in terms of upgrades, and would be better to wait for next year’s Ultra smartphone.

The best alternative smartphone to the Galaxy S24 Ultra would be the Google Pixel 8 Pro, which has similar internal specs and AI features, but at a significantly lower price tag. However, the final decision is up to you, so it is better to choose a smartphone based on your requirements and needs.
