Vivo X Flip

Vivo X Flip Smartphone Review – The Vivo X Flip is a foldable smartphone meant to compete with Samsung foldable smartphones. The phone was released on April 2023 in China but the company is yet to reveal any information on the global launch. So, fans of Vivo’s newest foldable phone will have to wait a few days for its global release. The phone folds vertically as opposed to folding horizontally. It’s more like the flippable phones from the past.

It has all the best specs in the Android market, including a flagship chipset, dual display, and a large battery. But a foldable phone is a lot different from a standard phone and people tend to have higher expectations from a foldable phone. To check whether this device meets your expectations, let’s get started with a detailed review of the Vivo X Flip smartphone.

Vivo X Flip Smartphone Review

Highlights

  1. The Vivo X Flip features a 6.74-inch LTPO AMOLED panel along with a 3 inches AMOLED Cover display.
  2. It is powered by last year’s flagship Snapdragon 8+ Gen 1 5G processor integrated with Adreno 730 GPU.
  3. The smartphone is pre-loaded with the latest Android 13OS out of the box withOriginOS 3user interface.
  4. The phone has a 50MP dual camera system on the back and a 32MP selfie camera.
  5. The Vivo X Flip also has a Li-Po 4400mAh battery with 44W of fast charging support.

Design and Display

The design of the Vivo X Flip is similar to other flip-based foldable smartphones in the market, including the Motorola Razr 40 Ultra. It folds in the middle vertically like all other flip-based foldable smartphones and has a cover display. Once the phone is folded, the phone’s dimensions change significantly. It becomes more square-ish and the thickness increases. The overall construction of the body feels solid and the back features a diamond-like pattern with the cover display and the camera module at the top half of the back of the smartphone.

The cover display is a 3 inches AMOLED panel with a sharp screen resolution. On the front, the smartphone has a 6.74-inch LTPO AMOLED panel with 1 Billion colors, 120Hz refresh rate, and HDR10+ support. The presence of an LTPO panel means the refresh rate can dynamically change and will surely save battery life. As for colors, the phone is available in Rhombic Purple, Silk Gold, and Diamond Black option.

Memory and Internal

The chipset powering the Vivo X Flip is the 4nm Qualcomm snapdragon 8+ Gen 1 5G processor that was launched last year. The processor is a very powerful and efficient processor that can. reach up to a 1×3.0GHz clocking speed. So performance-wise, the Vivo X Flip is among the fastest smartphones in the industry. This top-level performance also carries over to the gaming side of the smartphone. The smartphone comes with the latest Android 13 OS out of the box with OriginOS 3 interface.

Although it’s a foldable smartphone and not a gaming smartphone, the chipset doesn’t even break a sweat while gaming. The Adreno 730 GPU can easily run games like BGMI, COD mobile, and Genshin Impact with smooth and stutter-free framerates. The chipset-doesn’t seem to heat that much, even during intense use, partly thanks to the efficiency of the chipset. The phone comes in two variants: 12GB of RAM & 256GB of internal storage and 12 GB of RAM & 512GB of internal storage. Apart from this, the smartphone also has support for 5G connectivity.

Camera

The smartphone has two cameras on the back a 50MP main camera and a 12MP ultra-wide camera. The main 50MP camera can produce great details and colors in the pictures. Its dynamic range is natural and the sharpness is on point, thanks to the inclusion of Zeiss optics which allows for more light to shine through the sensor while protecting the lens from external damage. The same goes for the 12MP ultra-wide lens, which manages to produce equally amazing shots, but the detail level is slightly lower when you directly compare it to the main sensor.

The selfie camera is no slouch either. The pictures coming out of the 32MP selfie sensor look incredible. They have a good amount of detail, perfect colors, and a very natural skin tone. Even the night photography is amazing. The image boosting algorithms work perfectly well with the Night Mode algorithm, and the images coming out of the cameras look extremely well-lit with a decent amount of details in them. When it comes to video recording, the cameras can shoot up to 4K@30FPS with OIS but the selfie camera can only shoot videos at a maximum of 1080p@30FPS. Besides this, the gyro-EIS stabilization support is missing on the device.

Battery and Others

The Vivo X Flip has a Li-Po 4400 mAh battery inside the smartphone, which is surprising for a smartphone of this caliber. Since this foldable smartphone folds in half, it’s difficult for a company to put in a large battery. This is true for even the Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 4 which only has a 3700mAh battery. So, this smartphone will surely give you a full-day battery back upon normal usage, which is to be expected from a smartphone like this.

But if you are a very heavy user or play a lot of games, then the battery may not last a full day. When you do lose power, the Vivo X Flip has support for 44W of fast charging speed, which should quickly charge the battery. Apart from that, the phone has support for dual-band Wi-Fi 6, Bluetooth 5.3, a side-mounted fingerprint sensor, NFC, and a USB Type-C port for charging. As for pricing, the phone starts at $875 (Rs 71,690 in India) approx but we have no idea about international pricing as the smartphone is yet to launch globally.

Conclusion

The Vivo X Flip smartphone will provide a great experience to any user who buys this smartphone. Even at this price range, this device lacks in some parts such as water resistance, wireless charging, and a brighter display. The display is great and bright enough, but under direct sunlight, other foldable phones are better in this regard. Not to mention, the lack of water resistance and wireless charging is a deal breaker for some users. It would have been understandable if the smartphone was priced cheaper, which it is not.

As an alternative option, the Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 4 smartphone is a lot of value for money. So the Vivo X Flip does not compete with other foldable phones upon price comparison. But if you ignore the pricing comparison, it’s a great foldable smartphone actually and you will have a decent experience using it.
