The smartphone has been announced for launch globally and will go on sale in many countries excluding the USA. Samsung announced that the new smartphone will start shipping to customers by the end of March. Samsung went with premium materials when building the Galaxy A55 and it clearly shows.

It looks closer to the Galaxy S24 series. The new smartphone also comes with some excellent features, including 5G. Samsung wants to appeal to the upper mid-range segment. Let’s begin with a detailed review of the Samsung Galaxy A55 and see if this smartphone is worth purchasing for you.

Samsung Galaxy A55 Smartphone Review

Highlights

  1. The Samsung Galaxy A55 features a 6.6-inches Super AMOLED display with a 120Hz high refresh rate.
  2. The chipset featured in the smartphone is the Exynos 1480 5G octa-core SoC that is capable of reaching clock speeds of 4×2.75 GHz.
  3. The smartphone arrives with Android 14 with OneUI 6.1 for more customization options.
  4. The Samsung Galaxy A55 has a 50MP triple rear camera system with a 32MP selfie camera.
  5. The phone has a Li-Ion 5000 mAh battery and supports 25W wired fast charging.

Design and Display

The design of the Samsung Galaxy A55 is just as premium as the Samsung Galaxy S24 series. It has a similar metal and glass sandwich design and the smartphone feels great in hand. The side frame is flat, except for the button area on the right, which is slightly raised for easier access. The smartphone provides a solid grip and won’t slip out easily.

The texture of the smartphone also feels a lot more premium. The smartphone is protected against dust and water with IP67 certification. As for the display, you get a 6.6-inches Super AMOLED display. This display panel has FHD+ resolution, a 120Hz high refresh rate, and 1000 nits brightness which helps deliver a premium user experience.

The display panel is also color-accurate, so watching content won’t be an issue. The brightness of the display can reach 1000 nits under sunlight, so it will be a pleasure to use the smartphone outdoors. The display is protected by Corning Gorilla Glass Victus+. The Samsung Galaxy A55 is available for purchase in Iceblue, Lilac, Navy, and Lemon color options.

Memory and Internal

The Samsung Galaxy A55 is equipped with the Exynos 1480 5G chipset. This new chipset from Samsung is quite powerful and easily reaches clock speeds of up to 4×2.75 GHz, making it capable of running any of your daily apps smoothly in real-life usage. The system runs fluid and even the animations feel smoother than any other smartphone in the same price range.

This performance is also carried over to the gaming side of things as well. The Xclipse 530 GPU has the raw power to run games like PUBGm, CODm, Summoners War, and even Genshin Impact at higher graphical fidelity. For memory and storage, the Samsung Galaxy A55 is available for purchase with up to 8GB to 12GB of RAM and 128GB to 256GB of internal storage. There’s also a microSDXC slot for memory expansion.

The smartphone runs on Android 14 with OneUI 6.1 out of the box. Samsung also provides 4 years of Android updates and 5 years of security updates, which will enhance the software experience in the long run. The smartphone also supports 5G connectivity for lower latency and an even better gaming experience. You will also be able to download movies in a matter of seconds.

Camera

The Samsung Galaxy A55 has a 50MP triple-camera setup. The primary 50MP sensor has been optimized to capture more light than usual. So, the images and videos captured from this sensor have amazing details, saturated colors, and a high dynamic range. The same goes for the 12MP ultra-wide camera, which also manages to capture some amazing shots without much distortion around the edges.

The details coming from the ultra-wide sensor are amazing and the dynamic range is also on point. There’s very little deviation in colors when comparing the photos from the two sensors, which is not easy to achieve. So, hats off to Samsung for this. Then there’s the 5MP macro sensor that also takes some decent macro shots and you can manually focus on a certain element of the picture to achieve even better details.

On the front, there’s a selfie camera with a 32MP sensor. This sensor can capture some great selfies with even skin tones. When it comes to video recording, the smartphone can shoot up to 4K@30FPS from both the main rear camera and the selfie camera. Also, the rear cameras have both OIS and gyro-EIS, which leads to some stable video recording. Recording action scenes from this camera is an absolute delight.

Battery and Others

The Samsung Galaxy A55 has a Li-Ion 5000 mAh high-capacity battery that can easily last about 2 days with lighter usage. But, when you play games for a long period or take a lot of photos, it will drain the battery fast. In that case, the smartphone may not last a full day. However, the smartphone supports 25W fast wired charging.

It can fully charge the smartphone in around 2 hours. Other than that, the smartphone has support for Wi-Fi 6, Bluetooth 5.3, an under-display fingerprint sensor, NFC, stereo speakers, and a USB Type-C connector for charging. The smartphone is available for $410 (Rs 38,599 in India) approx. The smartphone won’t be available in the USA.

Conclusion

The Samsung Galaxy A55 is a decent mid-range smartphone on its own. It has a great display, a decent chipset, and a great camera setup. The battery performance is also quite decent. However, this price point is highly competitive, and other smartphones at the same price offer far better features and hardware inside.

Samsung’s device beats this smartphone in every aspect of the smartphone. It’s none other than the Samsung Galaxy S23 FE. It is available but will cost a little more but offers a significantly better chipset, camera, battery, and even display. On top of that, the Galaxy S23 FE offers wireless charging and telephoto and they are both missing from the Galaxy A55.

It’s this reason why Samsung refused to launch the Galaxy A55 in the US market as it would be DOA. While the Galaxy A55 is a decent smartphone on its own merits, its value significantly deteriorates in this highly competitive price segment. It’s the best alternative to this smartphone and offers far better value. However, the final decision is up to you, so it is better to choose a smartphone based on your requirements and needs.
