Vivo Y17s

Vivo G2 Smartphone Review – Vivo announced the Vivo G2 in January 2024 in China and later went on sale at the end of that month. Considering Vivo’s records, the Vivo G2 should be available globally, including India, but the company hasn’t announced any global release plans yet. Vivo designed the smartphone to have modern features including 5G but for budget users.

In terms of design, the smartphone follows a similar design language to that of Vivo’s other smartphones. So, the design will surely impress anyone who first lays eyes on this smartphone. The main attraction of the Vivo G2 smartphone is the chipset and battery. Let’s begin with a detailed review of the Vivo G2 smartphone and see if this smartphone is worth purchasing.

Vivo G2 Smartphone Review

Highlights

  1. The Vivo G2 has a 6.56-inch IPS display with 90Hz high refresh rate support.
  2. The Vivo G2 has the MediaTek Dimensity 6020 5G chipset that is capable of reaching up to 2×2.2GHz clock speeds.
  3. The smartphone comes with Android 13 OS with an OriginOS 3 user interface that has a lot of features.
  4. The smartphone has a 13MP rear camera with a 5MP selfie camera.
  5. The smartphone is powered by a 5000 mAh battery with a 15W wired fast charger support.

Design and Display

The design of the Vivo G2 is quite similar to other Vivo smartphones. It has a similar flat design with sharp edges on the sides that allow for a better grip of the smartphone. So, the chances of the smartphone slipping out of your palm is pretty slim. Overall, it looks quite elegant but it’s a shame that is not available in more colors other than Black.

The rear side is quite simple with only the camera island and the logo. While on the front, you will get the 6.56-inch IPS display with a water-drop notch. This HD+ display panel has 90Hz high refresh rate support. The lack of an FHD+ panel may not sit well with everyone, but at least it is color-accurate. The display also gets plenty bright at 840 nits brightness under direct sunlight, so using the smartphone outdoors won’t be an issue.

Memory and Internal

The Vivo G2 comes equipped with the 7nm MediaTek Dimensity 6020 5G chipset. The chipset can reach clock speeds of up to 2×2.2GHz, which is quite impressive considering the price point of the smartphone. With this level of performance, running everyday games such as Facebook, Snapchat, Instagram, Messenger, and more, won’t be an issue.

These apps will run smoothly. The same can be said for gaming. This chipset has the Mali-G57 MC2 GPU that can run high-end games like PUBG mobile, CODm, and Summoners War at relatively smooth framerates. The smartphone also comes with 5G connectivity to ensure you the best experience and lowest latency when gaming.

The Vivo G2 is running on Android 13 OS with OriginOS 3 user interface that has a lot of features. The smartphone can also be purchased with up to 4GB/6GB/8GB of RAM and 128GB/256GB of UFS 2.2 internal storage. It also has a 3.5mm headphone jack.

Camera

The Vivo G2 comes with a 13MP rear camera, which is capable of capturing pictures with decent detail levels and high dynamic range. The color range is also quite great and doesn’t feature an overprocessed look. For taking pictures at night, there’s a night mode inside the camera app that can boost the camera’s capability to capture detail levels at night.

There’s also an anti-stroboscopic sensor that reduces the strobing lines that appear on the camera when taking pictures on a computer or the TV. On the front of the Vivo G2, there’s a 5MP selfie camera. This camera can take some decent selfies with good white balance and a natural-looking skin tone. As for video recording, the Vivo G2 is capable of recording videos at a maximum resolution of 1080p@30FPS from the rear camera.

Battery and Others

The Vivo G2 has a 5000 mAh high-capacity battery that is capable of providing a super battery life. It can easily last for 2 days or more, but with a lighter usage that includes some camera, social media, YouTube, and so on. But with gaming, the battery will not last in the same manner. It will drain faster and you will be lucky if it lasts a full day.

But low battery notifications shouldn’t worry you as the smartphone supports a 15W wired fast charging. While this charger is not as fast as other higher-priced smartphones, it is still faster than the standard 10W charger. It can fully charge the battery in about 2 and a half hours. Apart from that, the phone also has Wi-Fi 5, Bluetooth 5.1, a side-mounted fingerprint scanner, GPS, and a USB Type-C port. The smartphone is available for purchase at  $145 (Rs 11,999 in India) approx.

Conclusion

The Vivo G2 smartphone comes with a unique set of features and capabilities that make it stand out among other smartphones in the same price range. The display of the smartphone is bright and color-accurate. The chipset is fast enough to run apps and games smoothly and provide a solid user experience. You also get a decent battery performance.

On top of that, you get 5G connectivity and all these make for an amazing budget smartphone. But the price of the smartphone is not as budget as it seems, especially when you consider other smartphones with similar features and capabilities. For example, the Realme V50s provides 5g, a better camera setup, and has the latest Android while asking for an almost similar price tag. So, there are pros and cons to both smartphones. However, the final decision is up to you, so it is better to choose a smartphone based on your requirements and needs.
