Motorola Razr 40 Ultra Pros and Cons

Motorola Razr 40 Ultra Smartphone Review – There’s no denying that the public’s interest in foldable smartphones has gone through the roof ever since Samsung first brought foldable phones to the mainstream market. Now, everyone’s jumping on board to create their own version of foldable smartphones and Motorola has done it thrice now. They first got into the foldable business in 2020 with the launch of Motorola Razr 5G, which had some fair success.

Then they continued the same formula with a bit of added bonus and saw a fair similar success but not the kind of magic success that initially hoped from the foldable lineup. However, they brought huge changes to their new series of foldable smartphones that not only challenged the Samsung Galaxy foldable lineup but defied public expectations. Whether or not, this smartphone proves to be an ultimate choice for people looking for a foldable smartphone, let’s begin with the Motorola Razr 40 Ultra review.

Design and Display

The design of the Motorola Razr 40 Ultra has seen some incremental changes, but it’s not too radically different from what we had last year in the Motorola Moto Razr 2022. Where we did see some radical changes, lies in the cover display. The bottom half of the back only consists of the Moto logo, while the top half of the back is entirely made of the display this time. The cover display wraps around the two cameras that sit at the top-right corner.

The cover display has a 3.6-inch AMOLED panel with 1 Billion colors, 144Hz refresh rate, and HDR10+ support. It can get up to 1100 nits of peak brightness under direct sunlight. The cover display is further protected by Gorilla Glass Victus. On the front, you get the main display with a 6.9-inch foldable LTPO AMOLED panel with Full HD+ resolution, 165Hz refresh rate, 1 Billion colors, and HDR10+ support. Alongside this, the panel can get up to 1400 nits of peak brightness.

Thanks to the use of an LTPO display, the refresh rate is adaptive. That means the refresh rate will glow when the contents on the screen don’t move but will go up to 165Hz as soon as you touch the display or start using the phone. The hinge that folds the phone is well crafted, making the mechanism very solid yet smooth. The side frame is made out of aluminum while the back is made of glass. All in all, it’s a solid smartphone in terms of build quality. It is available in three colors -Infinite Black, Glacier Blue, and Viva Magenta. Apart from this, the device surprisingly weighs around 184.5-188.5 grams and is quite lightweight as per foldable phone.

Memory and Internal

The Motorola Razr 40 Ultra smartphone has been outfitted with the 4nm Qualcomm Snapdragon 8+ Gen 1 5G chipset. This processor can reach up to a 1×3.19GHz clocking speed, making it one of the fastest Android processors in the world. It is slightly slower than the newest Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 in terms of benchmarks, but both processors are so fast that no one can tell which is the fastest processor in real-life usage. So, the chipset inside the Razr 40 Ultra has more than enough power to handle anything you throw at it.

The Adreno 730 GPU inside the chipset is just as powerful as the CPU. It can run modern games like Genshin Impact, CODm, and PUBG mobile easily with high settings and smooth framerate. The foldable phone also features an excellent heat management system and since the chipset is manufactured at 4nm technology, it doesn’t heat up that much in the first place.

The foldable phone also comes equipped with the latest Android 13OS with a stock interface experience. The Razr 40 Ultra smartphone is also 5G ready and capable of downloading your favorite movies and videos at gigabit download speeds. Apart from that, the phone comes with 8GB of RAM and 256GB of internal storage for the base variant and it goes up to 12GB of RAM and 512GB of internal storage.

Camera

The Motorola Razr 40 Ultra has a dual rear camera system with a 12MP sensor for the main camera and a 13MP sensor for the ultra-wide camera. The main camera sensor captures images and videos with amazing details, saturated colors, and a high dynamic range. Even if you zoom into the pictures, you will experience a ton of details there. The same goes for the 13MP ultra-wide camera which also manages to capture some incredible shots, but the color science is not as great as the main lens.

There’s a small shift in color tone in the ultra-wide camera as opposed to the main camera. The night photoshoot is exceptionally good. The amount of light that can be captured during the night is very scarce, but thanks to the night mode, you don’t have to worry about that. It manages to capture some amazing details in the photos, but the colors are a bit boosted, which is something that some may prefer but others may not.

The cameras can clearly hold their own value against the likes of the Galaxy Flip and other similarly priced smartphones. The selfie camera in the smartphone is a 32MP sensor that takes some impressive images that have a great amount of detail with even skin tones and accurate colors. When it comes to video recording, the Motorola Razr 40 Ultra smartphone can shoot up to 4K videos at 30fps from both the main rear camera and the selfie camera. Also, the main cameras have OIS and support for gyro-EIS for stable video recording.

Battery and Others

The Motorola Razr 40 Ultra smartphone has a Li-Po 3800 mAh battery capacity that should easily last about 1 – 2 days with medium to light usage. But, when you play games for a long period, the phone may not last a full day. But there’s nothing to worry about as the smartphone supports both wired and wireless charging. The battery can be quickly recharged back to its full glory with the 30W fast wired charging along with 5W wireless charging support.

Apart from that, the smartphone comes with a side-mounted fingerprint sensor, triple-band Wi-Fi 6E, Bluetooth 5.3, NFC, stereo speakers, and GPS. The price of the smartphone starts at 899 (Rs 89,990 in India) approx. for the base variant.

Conclusion

The Motorola Razr 40 Ultra smartphone provides the ultimate flagship experience without any compromises. Motorola managed to fix all the negativity that surrounded its previous iteration and went a few steps above and beyond to provide a much greater experience. We were honestly surprised to see such an improvement and the Viva Magenta color truly stole our hearts. The hinge is solid and the execution of the folding mechanism is very smooth. Both the main display and the cover display feature the best panel we have ever seen to date.

The same goes for the performance, cameras, and battery. The Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 5 is the only smartphone that comes close to the level of experience that the Razr 40 Ultra provides. But in our experience, we believe that the Razr is a better deal compared to the price and that remains a viable alternative. The Motorola Razr 40 Ultra is easily recommended by us, but in case you are still not convinced, then the Samsung Galaxy Flip 5 is also a great alternative since everyone has their own expectations and requirements from a smartphone.
