Satellite Connectivity to arrive with Qualcomm Snapdragon Android phones

Android smartphones are soon to catch up with Apple's emergency satellite connectivity feature.

Qualcomm confirms two-way satellite messaging service in next-generation Snapdragon Android smartphones.

Qualcomm's partnership with Iridium made it possible to launch this feature, while several additional utilities will be provided alongside emergency services.

Iridium operates in low earth orbit and is a major competitor of Globalstar, which is Apple's partner for the same service.

Snapdragon supports a two-way messaging service, SMS texting along with other messaging features creates excitement among Android smartphone users.

Qualcomm confirms that feature will also be used for recreation in different types of locations and not only for emergency situations.

Devices arriving with Qualcomm Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 chipset will start supporting this utility.

The feature will be rolled out in the second half of the year 2023 initially for selected regions only.

Qualcomm plans to expand this utility in the future for other IoT devices, laptops, cars, etc.

5G Non-Terrestrial Networks (NTN) will become available with Snapdragon satellite support.
