Vivo S12 Pro

Vivo S12 Pro Review – Vivo S12 Pro smartphone was launched in China on December 22, 2021, alongside the S12 non-pro model. The Vivo S12 Pro smartphone is very close to the recently launched V23 Pro phone in terms of specs such as design, internals, and camera. It supports 5G, and there’s a chance it will release in global markets but whether it will launch under the S12 Pro or V23 Pro is something that we can’t tell.

Vivo has carefully curated this smartphone for a very specific group of people. So, if you are someone who wants a stylish and high-performance smartphone, then this phone could be perfect. The design is indeed stunning, and don’t forget it has an AMOLED display. Let’s start with a detailed review of the Vivo S12 Pro smartphone.

Vivo S12 Pro Review

Highlights

  1. The Vivo S12 Pro features 6.56 inches of AMOLED display with a 90Hz refresh rate.
  2. It is powered by 6nm Mediatek Dimensity 1200 5G processor that is manufactured with a 6nm manufacturing process.
  3. It has Android 11 with Origin OS Ocean UI on top of it, and the available variant has 8GB/12GB of RAM and 128GB/256GB of UFS 3.1 internal storage.
  4. The main rear camera sensor is 108MP, but the highlight here is the pair of dual selfie cameras with a 50MP wide sensor and an 8MP ultra-wide sensor.
  5. The phone is powered by a Li-Po 4300 mAh battery with 44W fast charging support.

Design and Display

The design of the Vivo S12 Pro smartphone closely resembles that of Vivo’s other smartphone V23 Pro. In comparison, the Vivo S12 Pro was launched a month before V23 Pro, but it lacks the color-changing back panel. The back of the phone is made out of glass, while the frame is plastic with chamfered edges around the sides. The glass back is matte in finish and can be found in three colors: black, yellow, and blue.

The 6.56 inches of AMOLED display with Full HD+ resolution and 90Hz refresh rate. The display is also certified with HDR10+. Under direct sunlight, the display can get as bright as 1300 nits which should be enough for you to view your screen properly. Apart from that, the display features an astounding 88.9 percent of screen-to-body ratio because of the curved display and 90Hz touch sampling rate, which is great news for any gamers out there.

Memory and Internal

The Vivo S12 Pro smartphone comes in three variants, the base variant comes equipped with 8GB RAM and 128GB/256GB storage, but you can also get the 12GB RAM and 256GB of UFS 3.1 internal storage with the top model. Inside the phone lies the Mediatek Dimensity 1200 SoC that is manufactured on a 6nm node.

This processor can clock as high as 1x 3 GHz on the main core, and it also features the Mali-G77 MC9 GPU, so gaming and multitasking wouldn’t be an issue. You will be able to play at higher FPS while draining less battery with this processor. The device is running on Android 11 with Vivo’s newest OriginOS Ocean UI on top of it.

Camera

The rear camera system features a triple-camera setup. The main sensor is a 108MP sensor. The second camera is an 8MP ultra-wide sensor with a 120-degree field of view, and the third sensor is a 2MP macro sensor. The pictures generally come out well detailed and with natural colors during the daytime. The 108MP sensor really shines here and the images are bright with a good amount of details in the low light, and the sensor manages to really capture the dynamic range. But the same cannot be said for night shots.

There is a bit of noise in the low-light images, but turning on the dedicated night mode does manage to restore some of the details. The ultra-wide, however, captures very soft-looking images and lacks a lot of details. The decision of including just an 8MP sensor is partly the reason.

An ultra-wide shot contains a greater number of pixels than a regular shot, and hence just an ordinary 8MP in this day and age just doesn’t cut it. This doesn’t mean that the images are bad, but you are certainly not going to post them on social media without a bit of photo editing. Let’s just skip the 2MP macro sensor as there’s nothing to talk about.

The 108MP is the star here and can take some good-quality pictures. Any footage taken through this sensor produces very detailed videos with natural colors. It can shoot up to 4K@30FPS video, and the lack of OIS is compensated by EIS. The selfie camera system features two lenses, a 50MP wide sensor, and an 8MP ultra-wide.

The 50MP main selfie sensor takes very detailed images and can even record at 4k@30FPS with autofocus, but the ultra-wide selfie sensor captures soft-looking images and a bit of noise, just like the ultra-wide sensor in the back. The AI also assists in the selfie camera, and that seems to make a difference in the overall quality of the image.

Battery and Others

The battery featured in the device has a capacity of Li-Po 4300mAh along with a 44W proprietary fast charging that charges your phone from 1-60% in just 30 minutes as per the company’s claims. It uses the USB-C port for fast charging technology and the OTG. The phone doesn’t support reverse charging.

With typical usage, the battery can last for a full day, but if you play a lot of games, you will have to plug in the phone for charging before the end of the day. Apart from these, the device also comes equipped with Wi-Fi 802.11 a/b/g/n/ac/6, Bluetooth 5.2. For security, there’s an under-display fingerprint sensor. The price starts at $485 (Rs 36,499 in India) approx for the base variant.

Conclusion

The Vivo S12 Pro smartphone’s unique selling points are its design, performance, and camera power, especially the selfie camera. If you are looking for a stylish device that lasts a long time, then you may want to consider this device as it won’t slow down, unlike some other phones in this price bucket. But if you are someone who needs a good ultra-wide camera, then this smartphone is not for you.

Although the phone will be perfect for a lot of people, it may not be the one for you. It depends on what you want out of a smartphone, so make your decision based on that. Also, it is yet to be available outside mainland China as it hasn’t launched globally yet. If you want an alternative to the Vivo S12 Pro, then the Moto G200 is a worthy alternative.
