Huawei Mate XT Ultimate

Huawei Mate XT Ultimate Smartphone Review – The Huawei Mate XT Ultimate was announced in September 2024 and it will go on sale later that month. This is the world’s first phone with a triple foldable display and challenges the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 6 for the crown of the best foldable smartphone. As of this writing, this phone is only available in China but it could launch in Europe and other regions. However, Huawei has not made an official statement about it.

In terms of design, the Huawei Mate XT Ultimate looks similar to Honor phones but it is even more premium. It has all the latest hardware you can imagine, including 5G connectivity, but that’s not the most important part. The main selling point of this phone is its triple foldable display, which is bound to attract modern users. Let’s begin with a detailed review of the new Huawei Mate XT Ultimate and see if this smartphone is worth purchasing.

Huawei Mate XT Ultimate Smartphone Review

Highlights

  1. The Huawei Mate XT Ultimate features a 10.2-inch tri-foldable LTPO OLED panel with a 120Hz refresh rate. At the same time, the two cover displays have 6.4 and 7.9-inch LTPO OLED panels with the same 120Hz refresh rate.
  2. It is powered by Huawei’s best Kirin 9010 5G processor, which can reach clock speeds of up to 1×2.3 GHz.
  3. The Huawei Mate XT Ultimate runs on HarmonyOS 4.2.
  4. The phone has a 50MP triple camera system with an 8MP selfie camera.
  5. The Huawei Mate XT Ultimate has a 5600mAh battery with 66W of fast wired charging and 50W wireless charging support.

Design and Display

The design of the Huawei Mate XT Ultimate is similar to the Honor foldable phones, down to the camera module. However, the phone is much more premium to the touch due to the use of metallic side frames and eco-leather rear panels. The phone is extremely thin and lightweight, which minimizes wrist fatigue. In fact, the phone is as thin as 3.6mm when it’s fully unfolded.

Even when it’s folded, it is only 12.8mm thick max, which is on a similar level as the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 6 even though it is a triple-fold phone. This goes to show just how impressive this foldable phone is and how good it feels in hand. The phone should have some sort of water and dust resistance but the company hasn’t provided an official IP rating or mentioned anything about it. This foldable phone will be available in Black and Red colors.

Let’s talk about the displays. The star of the show is the 10.2-inch tri-foldable LTPO OLED panel with a 120Hz refresh rate. Essentially, when you unfold the phone, all three display plans realign and become a singular display with a large screen size of 10.2 inches. This provides a phenomenal viewing experience, which is further augmented by higher brightness levels and support for up to one billion colors.

When the phone is folded, the other two displays act as cover displays. They measure at 6.4 and 7.9-inch LTPO OLED panels with the same 120Hz refresh rate. All three display panels have the same technologies and have similar brightness levels. So, you will have a fantastic time no matter which screens you look at.

Memory and Internal

The new Huawei Mate XT Ultimate is powered by Huawei’s own Kirin 9010 5G processor, which can reach clock speeds of up to 1×2.3GHz. This is the company’s latest and best processor to date. While it is powerful enough to run anything you throw at it, it is considerably slower than the Qualcomm Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 chipset found in other flagship phones.

The Huawei Mate XT Ultimate has the Maleoon 910 GPU, which can play CODm, PUBG, and graphically demanding games like Genshin Impact and Black Desert Mobile decently. It can also run and more without any issues. The phone comes with HarmonyOS 4.2, which is tailor-made for a fantastic foldable experience for Chinese users. If it launches globally, it will have Android 14 on it.

The phone also has support for 5G connectivity for gigabit download speeds and lower latency in multiplayer games. The new foldable phone also comes with 16GB of RAM and up to 256GB/512GB/1TB of internal storage.

Camera

The Huawei Mate XT Ultimate has a new 50MP triple rear camera system. The primary camera consists of a 50MP sensor, which can take some fantastic pictures with detail levels that exceed our expectations. It is a seriously impressive camera that can go toe-to-toe with the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 6 or even it in certain scenes. The pictures also have accurate color tone and high dynamic range.

The 12MP ultra-wide camera is also equally capable and captures pictures with a 120° field of view. These pictures also have high detail levels in them but there can be a tiny shift in colors compared to the main camera in some scenarios. There’s also a 12MP telephoto camera that can capture pictures with 5.5x optical zoom and the pictures simply look fantastic.

There’s also a night mode present in the smartphone, and it allows the camera to capture more light than usual. It leads to bright images and noise-free pictures. For selfies, you get an 8MP selfie camera, which takes some decent pictures but nothing quite groundbreaking. When it comes to video recording, both the rear and selfie cameras are capable of recording videos at 4K. The primary rear cameras also have OIS and gyro-EIS for stable video footage.

Battery and Others

The Huawei Mate XT Ultimate is equipped with a Si/C 5600mAh battery, which can last 2 – 3 days on a lighter usage. This is possible due to the use of a large battery capacity and a new Silicon carbon battery chemistry. Even with medium to heavy usage, the new phone can deliver a full day’s worth of battery life and then some, which goes to show just how robust this battery is.

However, if you do a lot of gaming, then the battery will drain faster and may not last a full day. As for charging, the Huawei Mate XT Ultimate supports 66W of wired fast charging, which can fully charge the phone in just 1 hour 30 minutes. There’s also a 50W wireless fast charging, which is certainly quite fast.

Apart from that, the phone has support for dual-band Wi-Fi 6, Bluetooth 5.2, a side-mounted fingerprint sensor, NFC, infrared port, stereo speakers, and a USB Type-C connector for charging. As for pricing, the phone starts at $2811 (Rs 2,35,990 in India) approx.

Huawei Mate XT Ultimate tri foldable smartphone

Conclusion

Huawei has managed to design an incredible foldable phone that will surely leave many users stunned when they look at the Huawei Mate XT Ultimate smartphone. Its large display is impressive, and the mechanism that unfolds the phone is mesmerizing. In terms of design and display, this is the best foldable phone out there and it has no competition worthy of a challenge. You will have a blast of time using this phone no matter which screen you choose.

The camera performance is also exceptional and can even beat the likes of Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 6 in many scenarios. The same goes for the battery life. The main attraction to this phone is its chipset, which is not as strong as Qualcome’s flagship Snapdragon chipsets, so its gaming capabilities are far lower than what’s found in the Samsung foldable phone.

Overall, it’s a fantastic foldable smartphone but the pricing is not justified. The pricing is just too high for the base model. It’s significantly more expensive than the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 6. The best alternative would be the Honor Magic V3, which addresses the chipset issues of this phone and also has a lower price tag. However, the final decision is up to you, so it is better to choose a smartphone based on your needs and requirements.
